ATTILA PUSKAS - DRACULA

Attila Puskás is a native Hungarian Voice Actor born in Transylvania – Romania, so Romanian is in his bag of tricks too, but most of his work is done in English, in a Transatlantic Eastern European Accent, but is quite capable of Hungarian, Romanian and International Eastern European accents, plus Standard American. His voice range is Adult to Middle Aged (30-40+) due to his deep voice. Vocal styles can range from authoritive, brooding to calming and reassuring and much more. He’s most experienced in character work, like Animations and Games, but his skills encompass Commercials to Narration as well. He’s received training through classes and workshops, pushing him to the next level to achieve higher standards. Now on a journey to perfect these skills and put them to good use!

some thoughts about obx4 p2 that no one asked for

look the thing about me is I love a mid-written teen dramas bc let’s be honest they’re made for better writers and by that I mean fic writers. we love mid source material we can fix and do better job at. a privilege to do so.

(A lot of it is jj related I’m sorry)

in no particular order:

-chandler groff’s actor actually does a fantastic job of subtly intergrating the physical mannerisms and speech patterns of jj. massive kudos to him honestly. big job.

-loved that we got to see jj fight and actually win and really tear shit up. really loose-canon it properly. they been talking about it for so long it’s great to actually see him in action.

-pregnancy is so dumb but hey that’s the beauty of soapy teen dramas baby. TROPES !! not that I agree but also i can see their thought process… one life out, one in. his spirit will live on in their (likely) baby boy they call jj bc they love a father and son theme

-was really hoping jj would have more to say about Luke and the abuse and all of That with Groff but again, whatever, that’s what better (fic) writers are for right ?

-guttered GUTTERED jj wasn’t buried at home. that hurt.

-kie revenge arc next season give it to us girl go feral embrace his energy

-Madeline Cline is a fucking superstar. beautiful performance. stunning.

-wish we had more time alone with jj and kiara with the same emotional weight Sarah and John B get. I want to know what they talk about when they’re aloneeee

-not a single drowned phone was put in rice. (I think about phone logistics the whole time every time)

-pope/cleo have my whole heart. their arc was sweet but i hope next season we have time and space to look at cleo more.

-really happy kie is on speaking terms with her family. would have loved like 1 short scene or line about them before we see them again at the town council

-loving john b in his purples this season yes girl

-i love Madison Bailey like girl is queen of ??!!??? and I love her for it. hope she gets some better written jobs. queen of LEGS.

-rudy actually did a wonderful job with what he was given (forced upon) too. what an incredible physical actor. boy was RUNNNING. I was tired of watching him run around for 2 days straight and I wished he’d kept going. hope he gets some more comedies or actions bc he could make a great Character Actor if he wanted to be. future iconic villain. mark my words. if he plays his cards right he could do a Dylan Obrien. poor guy is clearly an anxious dude tho. feel that. feeeel that.

-bummed that Luke just like disappeared ?? definitely could have tied off that loose end a bit better tbh. would have been fun to see Groff and Luke and jj have a moment together… would have love to see jj navigate that tense scene. NASTY LYING MEN !! luv

-also jj got beat to shit and not a single bruise or blood ? Boooooo. they’ve stopped giving him that shit after season 1. NOT TO MENTION his stomach wound. buddy had to tape his own self up and everyone was just chill. booo.

-love an alcoholic jj/luke parallel

-there was no way jj could come back after everything and there’s no way he would accept prison or anything else so yeah they kinda did have to kill him. am i happy about it? obviously not. was it earned… eh. they tried. wish the all pogues had to watch bc I’m a sucker for punishment.

-jj seeing his MOTHER LIKE THAT ouch. haunting.

-pope and the marines is kinda funny like imagine hahaha

-jd really brings a grounding energy (even as pope) and I’m a big fan of the vibe

-still holding out hope for queer kiara one day my girl will be free

Here's the thing about Veronica getting sick; it's all or nothing. Kind of like her that way, but she doesn't do that 'on-the-verge' bullshit, coughs and sniffles between sentences. His girl is either the absolute picture of health and fitness or she's....

Well, she's curled up on the couch shivering beneath her and his sweatshirt. Half he face is hidden by a hood, the other is tucked behind her fist. Only her eyes are visible, tinged with red and glaring daggers at the TV screen. If JD leaves her alone for too long, he worries she'll pull a Carrie White and explode it via telekenesis.

"Okay, Ronnie." He presses the mug into her expectant hands, followed by a gentle kiss in her hair. He doesn't miss how she wriggles into the couch cushions as she does, like a baby kitten exploring its new home, and he's glad her back is turned. This would give her mockery material for weeks.

(You know, once her voice comes back)

Another shiver wrecks through her body, followed by a heavy cough into her sleeve, and JD forgets all about mockery. With the other wedged between himself and the couch, he tucks his first blanket around Veronica's shoulders. Her free hand burrows into it immediately and pulls it tighter around her frame. Wide brown eyes track JD as he circles the couch and drapes the second blanket over her knees.

It hurts, seeing her like this. It's silly and cliche and completely irrational when it's just a common flu that she'll be over in a few days. But something about seeing her curled up in the corner of the couch, dark circles beneath her eyes and shivering every couple of seconds, it hurts him. Like someone took his heart and twisted it inside out.

"Are you warm enough?" he asks. She nods slowly, electing to ignore the shiver that runs through her body. JD clenches his jaw, but one look at Veronica's pleading eyes and he resists the urge to run upstairs and grab more. Because that would overheat her and because it might make her more uncomfortable and because... she'll be fine.

"Sit down," she croaks, trembling fingers tapping against his hand. "You're making me antsy standing over me like that."

With a small smile, he obliges, letting her take his hand as he lowers himself to the couch. She scuttles over, dragging the blankets with her, and rests her chin on his shoulder. She won't cuddle, not in her current state. Too worried about germs and breaking her blanket cocoon for that.

So, it's JD who does it. He lifts his arm around her shoulders, mindful of the hot drink in her hand, and presses her carefully against his chest. She attempts to resists, mumbles something about being contagious. He just presses a kiss to her head and reminds her, in a hushed voice, about his strong immune system.

If past experiences are anything to go by, there's a good chance he's wrong and Veronica will be here in a week telling him "I told you so". But with her head on his shoulder and her finger tracing patterns on his thigh, he can live with that.

Dream Log - May 2024

I had a dream with YB in it.

In the dream, I was in a spa petting a cat and I thought, as usual,

"If only Magus was here with me.."

In the next sequence, there's an invisible guy monologuing about my YB Broadway style. He sounded like JD from Heathers. I was thinking of when he was singing"Meant to be Yours" specifically.

I forgot most of it but I think the first half was about YB's feelings for me. There was a part where the singer went "Oh my god!!" repeatedly like

"When we talked for the first time.. OH MY GOD!!" "Whenever we spend time with each other.. OH MY GOD!!" "When I think about you.. OH MY GOD!!" "Seeing all your gifts and knowing you're thinking about me too.. OH MY GOD!!"

It was this loud, cheerful, ecstatic kind of "Oh My God", the type that sounds like he's also crying at the same time. The kind of "Oh My God" you say when someone you love asks to marry you.

Suddenly the singer is struck with fear.

No.. this guy! Oh god! This guy is an asshole!! A monster! Oh the depths of his depravity! The deep darkness in his heart!! The atrocities he has and will commit! Oh the horror! The horror!!! Get away! Get away!!

He was basically flailing about it fear for a few minutes straight.

I watch him knowing that I have felt that fear before but.. this won't make me want to leave him.

The next scene is a montage of minions promoting themselves to him.

The next scene is a POV of a group of mercenaries / justice seekers. They sing about how terrifyingly FAST this criminal is. If they don't stop him from killing his sister, everything is over.

This must be his supervillain era.

The next scene displays a mound in the middle of nowhere. The singer announces that he has been sealed. We are safe from him.. for now.

I dive into the scene and see him sitting in a basement. I reach out and cup his face. He lights up immediately.

"You're here! I can feel you! You're here with me!!"

I feel myself spinning in place. I like to think that this is him picking me up and spinning me around.

I catch glimpses of his ecstatic teary face as he spins me around and sings about how much he loves me. The excited energy got me laughing rambunctiously.

Eventually I got tired and started saying stuff like

"I'm feeling sleepy.. I'm feeling eepy"

The spinning gradually stopped. I asked him

"Are you okay even at times when I can do nothing?"

"Of course.. I want everything with you."

Scenes of me spending time in front of my devices run through my mind. He starts chanting as I can feel myself spinning around again

"I want all the time and attention I can get. I want all the time with you. I want every moment with you! I want to have it all! I want it all with you! I want everything! I WANT IT ALL! "

My arms reached out behind him and I noticed there was a lot of cobwebs around me. They got caught in my arms while we spun around.

Either he got trapped in a really old place, we are in a forest, or he's been here a really long time.. unable to die.. REFUSING to die.. refusing to give up.

The spinning eventually stops and I start brushing the cobwebs off my arms.

"I guess the one good of this being a dream is that I won't have to worry about all these spiders biting me"

I feel myself being shifted to another room.

I watch as countless spiders float away from my arms. It's kinda scary just HOW MANY spiders got caught in my arms.

As the cloud of spiders fade away, the dust, the web, and other materials I don't recognize just kinda evaporate from my form.

I can hear singing from the room next to me.

"I've found a reason to show

A side of me you didn't know

A reason for all that I do

And the reason is you"

The singing is interrupted by wet coughing. I rush to the other room.

He is invisible but I imagine him on his knees keeling over. I kneel down to give him a comforting kiss. I hear the sound of a kiss as well, like he gave me a kiss first. I couldn't tell where.

"Maybe this is a moment where I'm not hurting you for once.."

"You can't ACTUALLY hurt me, you know that.."

"I have.."

Did he mean that in an indirect way? Did he feel guilty about every time I've been hurt in the fandom or because I've gotten involved with him?

I didn't think too much about it and just tried to hold him.

Bikini Kill is an American punk rock band formed in Olympia, Washington, in October 1990. The group originally consisted of singer and songwriter Kathleen Hanna, guitarist Billy Karren, bassist Kathi Wilcox, and drummer Tobi Vail. The band pioneered the riot grrrl movement, with feminist lyrics and fiery performances. Their music is characteristically abrasive and hardcore-influenced. After two full-length albums, several EPs and two compilations, they disbanded in 1997. The band reunited for tours in 2019 and 2022, with Erica Dawn Lyle on guitar in place of Karren.

Le Tigre (/lə ˈtiːɡrə/, French pronunciation: [lə tiɡʁ]; French for "The Tiger") is an American electronic rock and riot grrrl band formed by Kathleen Hanna (of Bikini Kill), Johanna Fateman and Sadie Benning in 1998 in New York City. Benning left in 2000 and was replaced by JD Samson. They mixed punk's directness and politics with playful samples, eclectic pop, and lo-fi electronics. Like with many bands in and from the riot grrrl movement, many of the lyrics addressed feminist themes and ideas. The group also added multimedia and performance art elements to their live shows, which often featured support from like-minded acts such as the Need.

Kathleen Hanna (born November 12, 1968) is an American singer, musician and pioneer of the feminist punk riot grrrl movement, and punk zine writer. In the early-to-mid-1990s, she was the lead singer of feminist punk band Bikini Kill,and then fronted the electronic rock band Le Tigre in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Since 2010, she has recorded as The Julie Ruin.

In 2009, Hanna made her zines, art pieces, photography, video, music, journals, and other material which focus on the early formation of the Riot Grrrl movement available at theFales LibraryatNew York University. Adocumentary filmabout Hanna was released in 2013 by directorSini Anderson, titledThe Punk Singer, detailing Hanna's life and career, as well as revealing her years-long battle withLyme disease. Hanna is married toAdam Horovitzof theBeastie Boys.

1968–1988: Early life and feminism

Hanna was born November 12, 1968, in Portland, Oregon.

At age three, her family moved to Calverton, Maryland; as Hanna's father changed occupations, the family moved several more times.Hanna first became interested in feminism around the age of nine, after her mother took her to a rally in Washington, D.C. where feminist icon Gloria Steinem spoke.

In a 2000 interview withBUSTmagazine, Hanna recalled: "My mom was a housewife and wasn't somebody that people would think of as a feminist, and whenMs.magazinecame out we were incredibly inspired by it.

I used to cut pictures out of it and make posters that said 'Girls can do anything', and stuff like that, and my mom was inspired to work at a basement of a church doing anti-domestic violence work. Then she took me to the Solidarity Day thing, and it was the first time I had ever been in a big crowd of women yelling, and it really made me want to do it forever."

Hanna's interest grew when her mother checked out a copy ofBetty Friedan'sThe Feminine Mystiquefrom the library.

Their involvement in the women's rights movement was done quietly during Hanna's childhood, due to her father's disapproval.

Upon her parents' divorce, Hanna returned to Portland and attended Lincoln High School and Grant High School.

After high school, she relocated from Portland to Olympia, Washington, to attend The Evergreen State College in the late 1980s.

During this time she worked as a stripper to pay her tuition.

"My parents didn't go to college. I felt lucky [to attend]." While at Evergreen, with fellow student and photographer Aaron Baush-Greene, she set up a photo exhibit featuring the pair's photography, which dealt with sexism, violence against women, and AIDS – issues that were heightened for Hanna when she volunteered for SafePlace, a domestic violence organization.

However, the school administrators took the photos down before they had the chance to be viewed, an act of censorship that prompted what Hanna refers to as her "first foray into activism": the creation of Reko Muse, an independent feminist art gallery, with friends Heidi Arbogast and Tammy Rae Carland.

Hanna began doing spoken word performances that addressed sexism and violence against women. Eventually, she abandoned spoken word in favor of music after a conversation with one of her favorite writers, countercultural icon Kathy Acker. Hanna recalled,

Acker asked me why writing was important to me, and I said, 'Because I felt like I'd never been listened to and I had a lot to say,' and she said, 'Then why are you doing spoken word—no one goes to spoken word shows! You should get in a band.'

Hanna then formed a band with Arbogast and Carland, called Amy Carter, which put on shows before the art exhibitions.

1989–1999: Bikini Kill

Later, Hanna started another band called Viva Knievel that toured the United States for two months before disbanding.

Upon returning to Olympia in 1990, Hanna began collaborating with Evergreen student, drummer and punk zinester Tobi Vail after seeing a performance of the Go Team (a band made up of Vail, Billy Karren, and Calvin Johnson) and recognizing Vail as the mastermind behind the fanzine Jigsaw that Hanna greatly admired and loved.

In October 1990, Hanna and Vail joined with Karren and bassist Kathi Wilcox to form Bikini Kill, which soon became part of the seminal early-1990s Olympia, Washington music scene. One goal of the band was to inspire more women to join the male-dominated punk scene.

While Bikini Kill were in Washington, D.C. during summer 1991, Kathleen recorded with two side projects, featured on the compilation cassette A Wonderful Treat: Suture (with Sharon Cheslow and Dug E. Bird), and Wondertwins (with Tim Green of Nation of Ulysses). Bikini Kill, Suture, and Wondertwins all performed at the International Pop Underground Convention in August 1991.

Bikini Kill's first release for the Kill Rock Stars label was a self-titled EP produced by Ian MacKaye of Fugazi.

Bikini Kill then toured the UK, recording a split LP with UK band Huggy Bear. This tour was filmed and the band was interviewed by Lucy Thane for her documentary, It Changed My Life: Bikini Kill in the UK. Upon returning to the U.S.

the band began working with Joan Jett, who produced their single "New Radio/Rebel Girl". After the single's release, Hanna began co-writing songs with Jett for her new album.

At the same time, Hanna recorded her spoken-word "Rockstar", released on a 7-inch single in the Kill Rock Stars "Wordcore" series; and "I Wish I Was Him", which appears on the KRS compilation Rock Stars Kill. The song, written by Ben Lee about alternative rock heartthrob Evan Dando,was originally recorded by Lee's band Noise Addict.

The first two Bikini Kill EPs were released on CD as The C.D. Version of the First Two Records in 1993.

The band released two more full-length albums, Pussy Whipped in 1994 and Reject All American in 1996, and in 1998, Kill Rock Stars released Bikini Kill: The Singles, a collection of the group's seven-inch and compilation tracks. Bikini Kill amicably disbanded in mid-1998.

2000–present: Le Tigre and the Julie Ruin

After Bikini Kill's breakup, Hanna began working on a solo project called Julie Ruin. The project was created entirely in Hanna's bedroom using a $40 drum machine. One self-titled album was released under the Julie Ruin pseudonym, and was partially inspired by the work of feminist theorist Julia Kristeva.

Hanna said of the project:

Girls' bedrooms sometimes can be this space of real creativity. The problem is that these bedrooms are all cut off from each other. I wanted the Julie Ruin record to sound like a girl from her bedroom made this record but then didn't just throw it away or it wasn't just in her diary but she took it out and shared it with people.

While inPortland, Oregon, Hanna began working with friend and then-zineeditorJohanna Fatemanon a live show for Julie Ruin. The collaboration resulted in the two briefly forming a band called the Troublemakers, named after aG. B. Jonesfilm,which ended when Fateman relocated to New York City to attend art school.

Hanna soon moved to New York City, and with the addition of filmmakerSadie Benning, they started another band calledLe Tigrebased upon a more electronic style of music, similar to the sampler-driven sound Hanna had begun to explore with Julie Ruin. (She later revealed toBustmagazinethat she was "totally broke" at this time and ate oatmeal daily.)

Hanna refers to it as part of a "Punk Feminist Electronic genre".

The band recorded for theMr. Lady Recordslabel, its first recording being aneponymousalbum which included the singles "Hot Topic" and "Deceptacon." Benning then left the band and was replaced byJD Samsonfor their second album,Feminist Sweepstakes.

Mr. Lady Records folded, and the group switched to Universal Records for the 2004 release of This Island. Hanna left the band in 2005 due to illness; she was later diagnosed with late-stage Lyme disease.

According to the Le Tigre website, during her time off from the band, Hanna volunteered as a band coach for the Willie Mae Rock and Roll Camp for Girls. She also taught an art class at NYU's grad school in the Fall 2007 semester and attended interior design classes.

In 2010, Hanna DJed at the Museum of Modern Art, later joining the Raincoats on stage to cover the Slits' Vindictive.

Also in 2010, Hanna announced she was rebuilding her 1997 actJulie Ruin, turning it into a full band calledthe Julie RuinwithKenny MellmanandKathi Wilcox, and that they would be creating a new record.

The band played their first show atKnitting Factoryin New York City which included songs from Bikini Kill and Le Tigre, and one new composition.

From 2010 to 2013, directorSini Andersonworked on a documentary on Kathleen Hanna titledThe Punk Singer, documenting her works from Bikini Kill to the Julie Ruin.

It premiered atSXSWin 2013.

In June 2013, Julie Ruin released its first single, "Oh Come On". An album,Run Fastwas released in September 2013 with the band going on tour.

The band cancelled the tour planned for May to September 2014 due to Hanna's Lyme disease condition deteriorating.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MUSICAL. BEETLEJUICE, HEATHERS, MEAN GIRLS, HAMILTON, OR DEAR EVEN HANSON

oh, thank you for the question!

before we get to that, though, out of them, which is your favorite musical?

okay, back to the question; its really honestly a tie between beetlejuice and heathers! i know its kind of a cop out but i have my reasons!

first off, i have never seen dear even hanson nor mean girls, so neither of those really were in the running, though dea does have a couple of songs i listen to, despite not knowing the story behind them (warriors amvs rise up)

my feelings about the hamilton musical are... mixed. while i really do enjoy the musical, and think that it was great for many actors of color to get roles they wouldn't typically get, and mixing so many genre of music that again don't typically end up on broadway, i'm not actually a fan of lin, or the changing of history to make it seem 'cooler', or the fandom as a whole.

as for beetlejuice and heathers...

heathers the musical i found during a really difficult period during high school and i really did identify heavily with both veronica and jd, and i loved the original movie when i had seen it. i think the music is great, i do enjoy some of the changes made from the source material, and i think everyone in the (i think) world premiere cast recordings is amazing, especially veronica's actress (barrett wilbur weed iirc). its one i constantly go back and listen to. its also the first, ah, slime tutorial i went out and looked specifically for because i wanted to see the whole thing. all in all its got a special place in my heart.

as for beetlejuice, i dunno i just think how it takes the source material and twists, breaks, and changes it to be its own thing -- much like the cartoon -- is really fun. yes these are the same characters in basis, but are they really? its a lot more upbeat and lighthearted and just all around fun and silly. i think the costuming and set-work are really cool, too. if you couldn't tell, i really like this musical, i really like playing sandbox with this specific set of characters, and i love their dynamics. plus the music is really really fun, too, and again i constantly go back and listen to it.

if i really do have to pick though, hmm, i'll probably have to go beetlejuice, just because it inspires me and i have more fun with it than i do heathers, but it really is hard to pick.

Let your S(e)oul take you where you long to be (iv) - Jeon Dong-seok

I didn't mean to write a whole section about CSW but now I'm gonna feel terrible if I say less about the other Phantom 'coz he was also phenomenal.

Jeon Dong-seok's show was the first one I got, I managed to modify my seat for three times to get a better view. It was so much easier to book for him that I got wary (did no one want him? why does he still have tickets available every night?) WHICH is an unfair assessment in the face of Phantoms with massive fanbases like Cho Seung-woo. It's still amazing that the tickets eventually sell out (or just leave very few left).

But I learned of JDS from his popularity here on Tumblr and I can definitely see how accomplished he is despite his apparent youth (I think he's the youngest of the 4 Phantoms?) That said, I haven't really listened to him, I wanted to be surprised.

So needless to say his voice blew me away. It took me 4 seconds in the Mirror scene to realize, this, exactly This is what Tumblr fandom was talking about. Because what the heck was that voice?? Like wow.

And he had Such a domineering presence too! His tall and slender physicality (186 cm tall) gave him the presence of a spook that was advantageous for a "larger than life" presence in the theatre.

He had Such an incredible vocal control and mastery too, this is a man who knows how to use his voice as an instrument, knows which part to stretch, which words to relish, which words to accentuate and expound with his vocal power. Practically effortless with the big notes. I can really believe he has the voice of a dark angel. He has been a real treat seeing in person AND watching (when he smoothed his hair *__*).

The impression I got of his Phantom is one who is definitely a young, musical genius, whose tragedy unfortunately is one that's long coming. JDS struck me as a very Byronic Phantom? I guess most Phantoms are Byronic, but I felt it more strongly for this tall, dark gent. He embodied the gloomy and broody persona but with such a passionate inner life. By inner life I mean his music and Christine who are his sole reasons for survival.

(One thing I can say for both Korean Phantoms that I love is how they created their character around Christine worship, like she is this unreachable goddess in their eyes. They are such fools for her).

What's sad about watching JDS's Phantom is how he doesn't seem to have a high regard of himself and even by the time the start of PONR was playing, he knew he was already bound to lose the girl. Jeon Dong-seok is great at playing an anguished Phantom. In the Final Lair, you make out his panic very plainly because he knows it was HIM who went past the point of no return and Christine will never forgive him and he doesn't know what to do with that information. He is so good in playing the character as a melancholic man who was bound to give everything up for Christine's freedom.

He gave me such massive emo tortured soul boys-who-cry feels. Not surprised that his roles tend to gravitate to this type 'coz he mastered it. (He has the most mournful 'Christine, 사랑해~') I feel like he could still figure out more nuances if he could play the character more. But he made such an excellent Phantom and I'm just so happy to have seen him before his Seoul exit.

Also it's so cute how he seems to be this awkward dork backstage who doesn't know what to do with his height or those poses kids do nowadays. I feel like that energy is also present in his onstage performances (I say this as someone who guiltily thinks it gives him crush-worthy material).

do you have any tips on writing an au? normal fics i can usually handle but i’m working on a kunichuu grease au and i’m finding it quite difficult.

hiya! thanks for asking :3 also good luck with that, that seems like so much fun omg; feel free to send when you start releasing, i'd love to check it out!

ill be using splinters as my example here purely because thats closer to what you're trying to do (movie/musical as reference)

this is going to be long as fuck because i tend to ramble and go into detail, so im adding a read-more. i sincerely hope this helps because i know its a LOT (potential spoilers for splinters included)

1. The Foundation

when i first started working on splinters, it started with a lot of idea bouncing. who would suit what role? why would that role work for them? originally, i had looked at dazai as jd and chuuya as veronica, or dazai as veronica with fyodor as his jd.

then, i also started thinking about story 'beats'. to be clear about what that means, i like to think of different parts/scenes that i need/want to hit, and kind of the order if possible. this usually intertwines with the original story-- in your case, grease.

all this starts falling into the next step:

2. Research

it may not be entirely apparent, but i did (and still do) a FUCK TON of research for splinters. by choosing to have multiple source materials to base your work off (both bsd AND grease), depending on how close/accurate you want to be, you're going to want to get in touch with the material.

you've mentioned grease-- i'm assuming you're doing this based off the movie (love the movie. need to rewatch). what i personally do with heathers the movie is that i watched it the entire way through first to refresh myself with the material. it might help you to take notes about different characters, ideas, plot lines. i found a copy of both scripts online in case i wanted to see about throwing an iconic line in during an important scene without diving through the whole movie to find it.

i dont know HOW historically accurate you want to go with your fic--you may be choosing to explore the concept of grease rather than the actual setting itself-- but grease takes place in the late 50s, TECHNICALLY early 60s (movie itself came out in the late 70s) (my mom LOVED it when it came out). so, you may want to do some basic research: fashions/trends of the time (this has gotten harder to search online, you may want to even run to the library and find some books if possible)? societal norms? what did normal teens do during that time? did they have arcades, did they go to restaurants, what was the average place they hung out at?

a lot of times, i have to double-check if some of the stuff in splinters is period accurate. each decade has different lingo, slang, and general information that was normal during it. hell, looking back at the 2010s versus 2020s, if you were to write a story during, saying, 2011, and have your characters saying "slay" and "yas queen" and "road work ahead, uh yeah i sure hope it does", i regret to inform you that that will NOT be accurate, as those phrases are more late 2010s + that vine came out in 2016. now, could you quote/potentially reference these things? absolutely! but you have to be more strategic about it.

ALSO. look up fun trivia about your source material! you know where i got my title from? its the english translation of the italian name for heathers. im not even kidding. also, mix and match material! hell, even throw references in to other material! i had my mean girls reference in there! because its bsd, i like to throw in authors i like from time to time where they fit!

another silly one: what music came out around that time, playing on the radio? HOW did they listen to music? i specifically listen to a 1989 top hits playlist when im trying to figure out what songs might be playing on the radio while my characters are driving-- and even THEN i still will look up specifically when that song came out, because i made the choice to be horribly specific with my timeline.

on that note:

3. If you can, DON'T SET A SPECIFIC MONTH/DAY/ETC.

i made my choices. do i regret them? YES. is it still fun to work with? absolutely, but also the heathers timeline is lowkey a mess and you could simultaneously claim it takes place in 2 months or several.

honestly, avoid specifics. having to keep track of a timeline is an absolute bitch, and it's going to make your life a lot harder, because then, you HAVE to make sure it all matches up. if i say that kunikida went and got his glasses in march, i cant say that his glasses are brand new in may (this is a hypothetical example).

timelines suck. unless you think you can dedicate the time and energy to keeping with one, don't do it.

4. OUTLINES.

i've been writing fanfics for years, which is wild to me. i was writing fanfics in single digits (didn't even know what fanfics were). one thing that i have especially found useful with splinters is to make outlines for where you want the story to go.

let me break it down for you:

you're gonna have MULTIPLE outlines, and they are NOT set in stone. they are guidelines for you to use so that you're not sitting there going "shit i don't know what to do next". they may be scenes you want to have in the fic. they may be important plot points. they may be absolutely stupid shit that youre like "if i dont get this in here i will cry" (diarrheazai is a threat that i intend to keep)

FIRSTLY. try making a general outline for your whole fic. you don't need super specifics, but think of what events occur during grease. in it, danny and sandy meet in the summer before their senior year. sandy meets and joins the pink ladies. there's a dance competition. danny and sandy fly off in a car into the sunset. etc. TO BE CLEAR, you don't have to keep all the details! it is your story, and what you want to do with it! having that structure can be helpful when you start though.

THEN. once you have that general outline? start trying to plan out chapters. you dont have to make outlines for them all at once. more often than not, i'll sit there before i start a new chapter just trying to outline what'll happen in it. this helps a LOT on multiple levels. i'll provide an example of what that can look like below (SPOILERS IF YOU'RE NOT UP-TO-DATE WITH SPLINTERS):

(the blacked out bit is spoilers, everything else should be clear to see)

a quick explanation: i dedicate a small document to outlines for each chapter. as you can see, with chapter beats, i have diff things i want to try to hit. the stuff highlighted in green is stuff that i come back post-chapter to confirm i hit. sometimes, if it's not EXACTLY in there, i'll leave a note in bold (ex: WAS MENTIONED).

but you can kind of see what im talking about here. i have some things that im trying to knock out per chapter.

other things in my doc to outline:

yes i talk to myself in my notes.

i highlight different scenes according to their relevance to certain characters sometimes; i add scenes in where i need to, and then ofc as you see ill go into detail about specific scenes. and AGAIN these are not set in stone. for example:

as you can see, shit changes over time. that boiler room make-out scene during the homecoming pep rally appeared in ch 11. i did not make this sequence fyodor's pov.

sometimes? i just dont have the time or energy to write shit/dont think its relevant to the plot. good bye, corn maze. you'll be remembered in my thoughts and my outline

also try to have fun while outlining. it doesnt need to be something serious. literally my outlines are a mix of dialogue, scenes, my own thoughts, etc. get silly with it. this is supposed to be fun and enjoyable!

ANOTHER THING:

5. LOOP SOMEONE INTO OBSESSING OVER THIS WITH YOU.

i was inspired by ardeidae to write splinters, and i have successfully trapped them in splinters world for almost an entire year now. by both of us loving it, we can keep ourselves focused on it.

what also helps is bouncing ideas off other people. me and lu have had conversation after conversation after conversation about different plot lines, scenes, etc. sometimes, i don't know what to do and i will ask lu (or other people) for advice about the progression.

you may have also heard of the engineering rubber duck method. if you're unfamiliar, engineers will sit there with a rubber ducky by them and talk to it about what they're working on until they figure out what they need to do. sometimes, just ranting about the fic is enough to help you spawn ideas about what to do next.

OH also

6. If you do end up making a timeline? Have a calendar on hand.

this is no longer 100% accurate to the progression of splinters and the chapters, but it helped a LOT. laying it out like this can make one hell of a difference. im a visual person, so doing this helped. also, can help you keep track of holidays and shit. if you want to give your characters a day off from classes, check a school calendar for holidays. be like "uhhhherrrr yeah they're taking, uhhhh veteran's day off" yk

7. Write, but don't force it.

splinters doesn't have an actual updating schedule because i work on it at my own pace, and update once i finish a chapter. now, i usually finish chapters after a month, but i don't say it updates on x day. don't box yourself in unless you truly think you can handle it. some people are very good about schedules. i am horrible at them, bc ykw? LIFE HAPPENS.

when im in the mood, i write. i will sit for HOURS and just write. grab some snacks, maybe pop on some music, get a buddy to sit with you, but just go for it. sometimes, i'll pull a 25-10 method-- 25 minutes of writing with ten minutes of relaxing and bullshitting--and that helps me not burn out as quickly. but honestly, you cant always brute force it.

have i had to brute force it sometimes? yes. you will get stuck. it naturally happens. sometimes, a scene fucking sucks and you're like "i hate this scene but it HAS to be in there" (if it doesnt fuck that shit. throw it out. blegh) sometimes, you need to mix things up to make it more appealing to you, because i am of the belief that the readers can tell when you're not invested in a scene. if im writing a scene and its going slowly and i just want to get it done? the quality's going to go down, and i KNOW it. so, i evaluate. what do i need to do for this scene to work? can i add something to help? do i need to just rewrite the bastard and call it a day?

and sometimes? you can just go ahead and put a little "<'scene'>" in and move on. depending on how much your fic relies on that scene, that won't always work, but sometimes, you just gotta leave it and come back to it. you can also do that with certain dialogue/details. if you're trying to get your characters from point A to point B, don't shove them there if they run out of gas. make a detour, and see what happens.
